Masks. Do they work? Are they safe?

Mask Efficacy and Safety. We have some answers...and more!

"We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic." READ THE STUDY

"We do not know whether masks shorten the travel distance of droplets during coughing. Further study is needed to recommend whether face masks decrease transmission of the virus from asymptomatic individuals or those with suspected COVID-19 who are not coughing. In conclusion, both surgical and cotton masks seem to be ineffective in preventing the dissemination of SARS–CoV-2 from the coughs of patients with COVID-19 to the environment and external mask surface." READ THE STUDY

"Face masks should not be worn by healthy individuals to protect themselves from acquiring respiratory infection because there is no evidence to suggest that face masks worn by healthy individuals are effective in preventing people from becoming ill." READ THE STUDY

"Our analysis confirms the effectiveness of medical masks and respirators against SARS. Disposable, cotton or paper masks are not recommended."

"Our study revealed a decrease in the oxygen saturation of arterial pulsations (SpO2) and a slight increase in pulse rates compared to preoperative values in all surgeon groups. The decrease was more prominent in the surgeons aged over 35." READ THE STUDY

"Respiratory acidosis occurs when breathing out does not get rid of enough CO2. The increased CO2 that remains results in an acidic state. This can occur as a result of respiratory problems, such as COPD." READ THE STUDY

"Most healthcare workers develop de novo PPE-associated headaches or exacerbation of their pre-existing headache disorders." READ THE STUDY

"This study showed that the filtering efficiency of cloth face masks was relatively lower, and washing and drying practices deteriorated the efficiency. We believe that the findings of this study will be very helpful for increasing public awareness and help government agencies to make proper guidelines and policies for use of face mask."

"This study is the first RCT of cloth masks, and the results caution against the use of cloth masks. This is an important finding to inform occupational health and safety. Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks, and poor filtration may result in an increased risk of infection. Further research is needed to inform the widespread use of cloth masks globally. However, as a precautionary measure, cloth masks should not be recommended for HCWs, particularly in high-risk situations, and guidelines need to be updated." READ THE STUDY

"Face mask use in health care workers has not been demonstrated to provide benefit in terms of cold symptoms or getting colds. A larger study is needed to definitively establish noninferiority of no mask use." READ THE STUDY

"Hypercapnia, or hypercarbia, as it is sometimes called, is a condition arising from too much carbon dioxide in the blood... where not enough oxygen enters the lungs and not enough carbon dioxide is emitted." READ THE STUDY

"Brain hypoxia is a form of hypoxia or oxygen deficiency affecting the brain. It occurs when the brain does not receive enough oxygen even though blood is still flowing." READ THE STUDY

"Expanded masking protocols’ greatest contribution may be to reduce the transmission of anxiety, over and above whatever role they may play in reducing transmission of Covid-19." READ THE STUDY

"Wearing an N95 mask for 4 hours during hemodialysis significantly reduced PaO2 and increased respiratory adverse effects in end-stage renal disease patients."

"None of these surgical masks exhibited adequate filter performance and facial fit characteristics to be considered respiratory protection devices."

"In the 1919 influenza pandemic, masks were available and were dispensed to populations, but they had no impact on the epidemic curve. At the time, it was unknown that the influenza organism is nanoscopic and can theoretically penetrate the surgical mask barrier. As recently as 2010, the US National Academy of Sciences declared that, in the community setting, “face masks are not designed or certified to protect the wearer from exposure to respiratory hazards.” READ MORE HERE

Medical Professionals Commentary

  • Great Barrington Declaration: "More than 9,500 scientists have signed an anti-lockdown petition saying that coronavirus policies are causing "irreparable damage. The petition was written on October 4 and has signatures from thousands of medical and public health scientists, medical practitioners, and over 450,000 members of the general public. It was co-authored by Dr. Martin Kulldorff, a professor of medicine at Harvard; Dr. Sunetra Gupta, a professor at Oxford University; and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a professor at Stanford University Medical School."Read more from the original article HERE

  • Patricia Neuenschwander, R.N.: "there is no compelling scientific evidence that shows that healthy people should be wearing masks."

  • Dr. Paul Thomas: "wearing a mask promotes fear, which we know is bad for the immune system. It reduces breathing in the fresh air, which is also bad for the immune system, and it does little to nothing to prevent the spread of a virus.”
